Sudan floods battled
Khartoum (an)- in the Sudan, emergency relief operations are being mounted against heavy flooding that has displaced some fifty thousand people.

The Sudanese government .and the United Nations world food program are distributing more than 700 tons of food to the afflicted areas, over a period of several months. Medical supplies have been flown in by the U.S. government, from UNICEF emergency stocks in Sweden .

The medicines will be airlifted from the capital of Khartoum [khar-toom’] to Kassala [kah-sah’-lah] on the Eastern border; and sent by truck across the desert to Dongola [don-goh’-lah] in the north. Food supplies are coming from world food program stockpiles already in the Sudan for other purposes.

The floods to the north have virtually destroyed this year' s millet and date crops, which make up a large part of the Dongola people's income but the flooding is simply a grander version of the Nile's annual inundation and relief officials expect the crisis to be temporary.
Dongola people are used to dealing with flood-waters, and know how to move out of their path, so there has been no loss of life
