One could argue that travel is an essential part of American life. Native American nations that resided on the plain lived a nomadic lifestyle following the buffalo, European colonizers had to cross an ocean then their descendants expanded across the continent on routes like the Oregon Trail. As a result of this “Manifest Destiny” expansion Canada and the United States grew dramatically. The love of travel by North Americans in general and of United States citizens in particular was used by the Federal Writers Project to employ writers during the Great Depression by sending them out to gather information that was later published into state guide books. Today the road trip is still an important part of the American way of life.
