Gymnastics Camp

No one wants to get a lot of angry letters, but that is what ISU President Landini received from individuals and organizations upset over the elimination of some ISU sports.  By 1980, ISU had over fifteen intercollegiate sports.  Some of the more successful programs produced Olympians like gymnast Kurt Thomas, wrestler Bruce Baumgartner, and archer Benita Edds.  Despite programmatic success, Athletic leaders and university Administrators under Landini decided to cut some sports in order to redistribute funding to others.   From 1982 to 1987, fourteen sports were eliminated.  Athletes, athletic organizations, and the ISU community wrote, discussed, and expressed anger over the Administration’s decision to no avail.  Since then, ISU has also cut Men and Women’s Tennis (2009), but brought back two sports, Women’s Golf (2006) and Women’s Swimming & Diving (2016).  Though ISU Athletics would later honor some of teams and players from discontinued sports in the ISU Athletic Hall of Fame, the decisions to eliminate certain sports still leaves a bitter taste for some.
