During the 1980s, ISU’s international student population boomed. While ISU had international students previously, the numbers mushroomed in the 1980s, resulting in numerous international student organizations.  Due to the increasing number of international students, international student events and international student organizations became commonplace by the 1990s.  In the 1990s it was common to see student groups like- the Chinese Student Association, Hong Kong Student Association, Japanese Student Union, Singapore Student Association, and the African Students Union to name a few.
